The Big Bush Orchestra

Calling all fiddlers, players of accordion, flute, whistle, mandolin, concertina and just about any instrument you can imagine!

Everyone's welcome

Anyone who plays a musical instrument and has a festival wristband (ticket) is eligible to be part of this exciting group directed and led by Sydney fiddler Trish Barker. Earlier this year Trish conducted the Celtic Fiddle Rally at the National Folk Festival in Canberra and for our Big Bush Orchestra she has planned a great program of music.

As in previous years the music is available to download from the website so that you can practise and prepare prior to the Festival. There will be two rehearsals over the Festival weekend, culminating in a public performance on the Carberry Park Stage on Sunday 21st September.

The Great Whistle Walk

This is an activity which we are launching at The Turning Wave 2008 and it's all about the humble 6-hole end-blown flute known as the whistle, also referred to as the tin whistle, the pennywhistle or the Irish whistle.

Playing a piece of music on a whistle can be relatively easy with some basic skills, playing it well takes a small amount of skill but, when a number of whistle players try to play the same piece of music together, well now.... that is a challenge! But that is, indeed, what we are going to do. Join your fellow whistle players and take part in the Great Whistle Walk from the top to the bottom end of Sheridan Street, Gundagai as part of the Spirit of Place Parade on Sunday 21st September.

All you need is a "D" whistle and be able to play two simple tunes in the key of G:

Roddy McCorley (Irish) and The Road to Gundagai (Australian).

MP3 version of tunes available soon.

The Festival Choir

This year's Festival Choir will be led by the Gundagai Community Choir and the Sydney Trade Union Choir. Each choir will prepare one song to teach at the workshops and the songs will be performed at the Spirit of Place Concert on Sunday at 1.30pm. Come along and be part of this great event and enjoy the opportunity to perform with these two experienced choirs.

Choir workshops are held in Mirrabooka on Saturday at 4pm and Sunday at 11.30am.
